Friends Program

“Empowering students to be resilient for life!” Langdon School students will continue with the “Friends Program”. A comprehensive meta-analysis of school-based social and emotional learning programs suggested that students who participated in these types of programs showed improved social and emotional skills, attitude, behaviour and academic performance compared to students who did not complete such programs (Durlak, Weissberg, Dymnicki, Taylor & Schellinger, 2011). Furthermore, Fisak, Richard, and Mann (2011), compared a number of programs aimed at reducing anxiety in school aged children and found the FRIENDS program to be more effective than other programs in reducing anxiety. Research also suggests that the effects of the FRIENDS programs are maintained at 3-year follow-up (Barrett, Farrell, Ollendick, & Dadds, 2006). The FRIENDS programs are endorsed by the World Health Organization, supported by the New South Wales Ministry of Health (Christensen et al., 2011) and have a strong evidence base in the prevention and treatment of anxiety and depression.
